Fire alarm panels are required to meet specific communication standards under NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code. What a fire alarm panel does

A fire alarm panel is the central control unit of a fire alarm system. It monitors inputs from smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual pull stations, and other fire safety devices, then activates alarms and notifies emergency responders when a fire or system issue is detected.

Fire alarm communication standby power

Fire alarm communication systems may be subject to standby-power requirements at both the protected premises and the network level.

  • Standby power at the premises. Secondary power capacity must provide at least 8 hours of operation during a power failure where acceptable to the local Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Standby power at the network level. The network infrastructure carrying fire alarm signals must maintain the required standby power. This applies to the data centers and network equipment routing communications.

Applicable requirements can vary based on the communication technology, adopted edition of NFPA 72, system configuration, and local amendments. Confirm the required backup duration with your licensed fire alarm contractor and AHJ.

The MFVN requirement

One of the most critical and frequently misunderstood requirements in NFPA 72 applies to fire alarm systems that use a Digital Alarm Communicator Transmitter, or DACT.

A DACT must connect to a Managed Facilities-based Voice Network, or MFVN. An MFVN is a physical network managed by a voice service provider to support service quality and reliability. The connection must also provide the loop-start telephone interface expected by the DACT.

Standard internet-based VoIP should not be assumed to meet this requirement. A conventional VoIP service may route communications over the public internet and may not provide the managed architecture, line seizure, backup power, or signaling compatibility required by the fire alarm system.

Other listed fire alarm transmission technologies may be permitted, depending on the system design and requirements adopted in the jurisdiction. Any replacement communication method should be reviewed by the fire alarm contractor, monitoring provider, and AHJ before installation.

Keep complete records of inspections, testing, maintenance, faults, and corrective actions. These records support audits, demonstrate ongoing compliance, and help technicians diagnose recurring issues.

If your panel shows a trouble signal

A trouble signal indicates a fault in the system, such as a wiring issue, device failure, power problem, or communication error.

Immediate response checklist

  • Check the panel display for specific error details.
  • Verify that communication lines, batteries, and power sources are working.
  • Contact a licensed fire alarm technician if the issue cannot be resolved immediately.
  • Confirm with the monitoring company whether signals are still being received.
  • Follow required impairment and AHJ notification procedures.

  • Required backup power at the protected premises
  • Required resiliency and standby power within the provider’s network
  • Reliable delivery of alarm, supervisory, and trouble signals
  • Compatibility with the existing fire alarm panel and monitoring-station receiver
  • Applicable equipment listings, certifications, and local approvals
  • End-to-end testing with the monitoring station after installation

Important: The local AHJ has final authority over what is accepted in a particular jurisdiction. Provide technical documentation and certifications for review before changing the fire alarm communication path.
