Ooma Introduces Ooma Smart Cam, Its Next-Generation Indoor/Outdoor Video Security Camera, Intelligent Enough to Recognize Friend from Foe

Sunnyvale, CA - Friday, January 4th, 2019

Ooma, Inc., a smart communications platform for businesses and consumers, today announced Ooma Smart Cam, its next-generation indoor/outdoor high-definition video security camera that’s fully wireless and delivers advanced features, including facial recognition, onboard memory and battery backup, night vision, seven days of free cloud storage, and more.

The compact Ooma Smart Cam (www.ooma.com/home-security/camera/) can be placed anywhere, connecting through Wi-Fi without the need for a base station. The weather resistant camera includes a wall mount, so users aren’t forced to pay extra for mounting. The intuitive design allows for all configuration, control and video viewing through the convenient Ooma Smart Cam mobile app for iPhone and Android.

Ooma Smart Cam - mounted outdoors

Ooma Smart Cam is part of Ooma Smart Security, an innovative security and monitoring platform (wireless home security systems) that provides comprehensive do-it-yourself awareness and protection through a range of sensors for detecting motion, the opening of doors and windows, water leaks and the opening of garage doors.

Industry leading features of Ooma Smart Cam include:

  • Facial recognition – Unwanted notifications, common in other home security cameras, can be significantly reduced through facial recognition that suppresses alerts for known persons. Artificial intelligence built into Ooma Smart Cam and its cloud storage service allows users to train the camera to recognize faces of family members, friends and even pets – the only security camera that can do this.
  • Backup battery and onboard memory – Ooma Smart Cam is the only smart security camera that can record without external power or an internet connection, storing video for upload when an internet connection is re-established. The camera contains an internal battery that runs for six months under typical usage conditions and has 16 GB of onboard memory for retaining video clips, so users can see what happened even during a power outage or when the camera is used in locations where power and internet aren’t available.
  • Instant video capture – Ooma Smart Cam springs to life almost immediately when motion or a loud noise is detected, starting to record in less than a second. This captures the full context of security incidents, unlike many other security cameras that take two to four seconds to wake up after being triggered.
  • Auto privacy mode – The camera can be set for geofencing, where it is automatically turned off when a user returns home, based on the location of the user’s mobile phone, and automatically turned on when the user departs.
  • Full HD and night vision – Video is recorded in full 1080p HD through a 130-degree wide-angle lens, with noise-cancelling digital audio as well as night vision for seeing in full darkness.
  • Two-way audio – The Ooma Smart Cam contains both a microphone and a speaker. While livestreaming, users can talk to people in range of the camera through the Ooma Smart Cam app on their phones.
  • Seven days of free storage – The cloud service that supports Ooma Smart Cam will store the most recent seven days of clips at no charge. An optional subscription plan extends storage to 30 days.
  • Secure transmission. Ooma Smart Cam uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption when transmitting video from the camera to the cloud and from the cloud to the user’s mobile device, to prevent snooping.
  • Magnetic mount – The included wall mount has a magnetic connection to the camera, making it easy to pop the camera off the mount for charging and pop it back in place when charging is complete. There’s also a standard tripod socket on the back of the camera, compatible with most off-the-shelf indoor and outdoor security camera mounts.

“Ooma Smart Cam is an intelligent security camera with the ability to recognize people, listen for unusual noises and detect motion, all while minimizing the hassle of false alarms that create hours of useless recordings,” said Ben Nader, general manager of video solutions at Ooma.“ We designed Ooma Smart Cam with all these features in mind and we made it rugged enough for outdoors yet elegant enough for indoors, so it fits seamlessly into the lives of our customers.”

Ooma Smart Cam also brings depth to Ooma Smart Security, integrating with the platform’s other sensors to tell the whole story of what’s happening when users are away. For example, an Ooma Smart Security motion sensor can trigger Ooma Smart Cam to make a recording, so users have visual confirmation of any activity. There are multiple options for receiving alerts, including text messages, push notifications and even automated phone calls. And Ooma Smart Security is the only comprehensive security solution to offer Remote 911™, where users can call through a mobile phone from anywhere in the world to reach local 911 operators for their home or business address.

Pricing and availability

Ooma Smart Cam (www.ooma.com/home-security/camera/) is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2019 for $149.99 from Ooma.com, as well as leading retailers in the U.S. and Canada. Ooma provides seven days of free cloud storage for video clips recorded by the camera. The optional Premium plan provides 30 days of storage and advanced features, including facial recognition, two-way audio and geofencing, at $4.99 a month for one camera or $9.99 a month for two to six cameras.
