I was just wanting to know if anyone had successfully used the USB port on the core for anything such as charging a cellphone

The USB port on the Ooma Hub is inactive.
The USB port on the Oma Telo is functional.

I use it to for the WiFi adaptor in my Telo unit. I have never tried to charge anything using it.

My Telo is in a cabinet. I use the usb port to power a cooling fan.

The original question was about the Hub (Core) product.
The USB port on the Hub is non-functional as stated in the second post.

If it is non functional, why is it there?

Probably the Hub's design, at the time, wasn't adequate to handle USB traffic.

The hardware was designed long before the firmware (software) was written which is true of most products.
Apparently the plans for the USB port didn't prove feasible so it was never activated.
It was less expensive to leave it in place instead of re-designing the motherboard and the case to remove it.

On the Telo it has two uses - bluetooth adapter and wireless adapter.
