Thank you for the explanation. We are disconnecting the phones for now. The only thing we like about having our phone connected to the box is it lists our incoming phone calls on the TV, where we can easily catch a phone call from our son in Oregon. At least now it has been explained. Thank you once again. and thanks to all of you for the help and the input.

What does *99 do?

Switches to a codec that is more compatible with modem data connections. It also turns off echo cancellation.
