The user guide states I must dial *99 before sending a fax. What does *99 do?

*99 forces ooma to use a lesser compression algorithm for that call.
Normally voice calls are compressed by VOIP systems for bandwidth issues / ease of transit, but because faxes rely on a handshake of tones rather than voice, no compression on the line allows for a better transmission
