OOMA and Home Security Systems

Post by umauser » Mon Mar 23, 2009 1:37 pm

I would appreciate experiences of OOMA users with home-security systems:

* do home-security systems with "central-monitoring" work with OOMA, when there is NO land-line phone-connection? (The security-system automatically dials the central-monitoring station using the phone-line, when it trips).
* if so, what kind of internet connection did you have? Cable? fibre (e.g. FIOS)? DSL?
* were there any specific issues you had to deal with in setting up the connection? what?
* what are the pros and cons of using OOMA with a home-security system? issues to keep in mind.

if someone breaks in to your house and cuts the power, you're SOL because ooma requires a power connection since it uses a cable/dsl modem which will lose power. This can be avoided by using a dedicated battery backup for the modem and for the ooma device. (20$~60$)

I have a dedicated battery backup in use with my cable mode, router and ooma hub and it works just fine.
