Host Name?

Post by Stuntman » Tue Apr 28, 2009 9:44 am

I have my OOMA behind my router and it is qiven an IP address from my router along with all the other devices inside my house.. the OOMA device does not seem to have a host name though and I have a hard time picking it out of my DHCP list.. would it be possible to have the device register itself with a name so that it could be easily identified on a network?

Both my Ooma hubs show a name of * in the device list for my router. I use static DHCP and they are assigned fixed IP addresses. Which makes it very easy to know which device is which on my network (every type of device which regularly uses my network is assigned an address within a range defined by device type).

a) Configure your router to give the Ooma the same static IP address each time it makes a DHCP request. Most routers have this capacity, and all you need is the MAC address of the Ooma's WAN interface. For now, let's say your router is, and your Ooma is

b) Setup a static route in your router that makes the gateway for all traffic destined for the subnet.

c) On the Ooma, place (the IP address of it's LAN interface) in the DMZ.

d) You should now be able to login to the Ooma as or

e) If you would rather use a name, edit the hosts file on your computing platform. On a Mac or Linux it is /etc/hosts. On Windows, someone here posted that it is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. When editing this file, add the line "", or ""

Hope this answers your question ....
