I am going with the Premier option. No trial period needed. When I activated the Telo I went through all the screens and one of them was number porting. I said, yes. As I was going to pay for porting and get the free handset but was not given that option. I assume it comes later after the port. Is that correct? If not, when and where do I make that request with ooma?

You get either a free port or a free handset so the fact that you said yes to the port probably blocked the free handset option. Call support and tell them what you want to do.
