Why am I charged tax for adding money to my prepaid account?

Post by themachine » Tue Feb 26, 2013 11:10 pm

I added $10 to my prepaid account for international calling. Previously I was never charged tax when adding money to my account, my credit card was charged the exact value I added. However this time my credit card was charged $10.75. Why is Ooma charging me tax when I add my own money to make calls? Given I'm already paying a monthly tax, taxing this doesn't make sense to me.

Perhaps your state is now added to states wanting Ooma to charge sales tax. Previously WA and CA.
During check out, Ooma used to show: "State and local sales taxes may be added to purchases in the states of WA and CA." But now, there is extra blurb saying "and other locations."

Response makes no sense. Adding money to the prepaid account does not constitute a sale, which only occurs when a call is made.

For these areas (WA, CA), any taxes charged when buying prepaid balance is sales tax; on call basis, international calls would be charged FUSF tax as described in the international product page.
