I just bought a Telo via ebay and I have 7 days to return it. This unit is for a second home that I won't visit until May. Does anyone know how to test a unit without installing it?

Probably your best bet would be to contact Ooma and find out from them:
Phone: 1-888-711-OOMA (6662)
Monday-Friday 7am-7pm PST
Saturday-Sunday 8am-5pm PST
Visit the buy page for a list of authorized resellers.
Phone: 1-866-452-OOMA (6662)

If you do find out, let us know on the Ooma Forum. Thanks in advance.

Activate online, then power it up after plugging into the router, plug a phone in and test.
You can leave it plugged into the router but turned off....turning it on at least once every six months.
