If you have a router, I would connect Modem-Router than connect the Ooma device and the computer that contains the server to one each of the router's LAN ports.

If you have Quality of Service issues with the Ooma device, reserve a static IP address for the Ooma device in the router and than place the Ooma device's static IP address in the router's DMZ.

With this setup, everything should function properly.
