Retrieving ported number FROM Ooma

Post by just4fn » Thu Mar 19, 2009 6:39 am

Let's say Ooma goes out of business 1 year from now- hope not but you never know. What happens to all those phone numbers that have been ported if there is no one there to answer the phones to get your number back??? I guess that could happen to any company but is seems more of a risk with a new company. Just wondering.

Your number is actually held by a carrier, not by ooma. There are several carriers, one of which is Level 3. This is the case no matter which phone company you have your service with. When you port your number the transfer is handled by the carrier. The carrier notifies the phone company that your number is being ported to another provider, and there really isn't anything the phone company can do about it as long as it's a legitimate port. If ooma wasn't around, the only thing that would happen is there would be nobody for the carrier to notify of the port. If ooma did go under there would be a certain period (not sure how long that period is) where you would be able to port your number to another phone company. If you didn't do the port in that time period, then the carrier would release your number for use by someone else.
