I just recieved a call that came up on CID as SouthNet, 336-217-0877. Standard proceedure, I didn't answer, they hung up on VM. So as usual, I googled the number. The top hit was here, http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-336-217-0877. Take a minute to read the 3rd post. I believe that the poster, Mark Barns is being truthful about being the victim. The info he posted about SouthNet checked out when googled. Here is their website. http://newweb.sonet.net/contact.shtml
If there isn't laws already, it's time to start requesting anti spoofing laws from our lawmakers and call tracing as a standard phone feature. I think it also shows another BIG reason to look forward to the "auto detect caller-ID spoofing" software Bobby B. spoke of here:
Bobby B wrote:We've added the ability to blacklist your own numbers (it sounds strange I know). This should be a stop-gap measure for caller-ID spoofing until we can build something a bit more sophisticated that will auto-detect caller-ID spoofing and take corrective action.

I REALLY want to see what Ooma engineers can come up with to combat this ID thieft, which it what it really is IMHO, and I hope it's implemented VERY soon.

EDIT:
Look what I just found. http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/callerid.html
Now I'm looking forward to the next spoofed TM call. How much info can I get from them?

Supposedly, you can sue them, if you can get them to give you the info to make the claim.

Until Caller ID spoofing is made illegal, regardless of your justification for it, Caller ID itself is a worthless concept and should be terminated completely. I know, I know, I've heard all of the sob storied about why people need to legitimately spoof, and for every single one of those there are very simple alternatives to the problem.

I sure hope they do something about this. SPAMmers and telemarketers are relentless to the point I consider them a form of endless extortion. Although if I had only one vote for who to vote off the planet it would be politicians or the media so maybe I shouldn't complain too much.
