I am in the process of having my number ported from AT&T. I also have long distance service with AT&T. Can I cancel my long distance service with them as I wait for my number to be ported ? I have to wait for my phone & internet billing to be separated and this could take up to 2 billing cycles.(so they say) If I have to wait that long I sure would like to cancel my long distance service so I won't have to continue paying their outrageous fees. So is this possible ?

I read somewhere on this forum that if there is any "work order" with your existing phone company when porting is scheduled it will block the port. I would leave things alone until the port is confirmed.
