ooma taxes and Magic Jack

Post by just4fn » Sat Apr 09, 2011 8:28 pm

My Ooma taxes are 3.47 month = 41.64 a year. How does Magic Jack only charge 19.95 a year? Do they pay the remaining taxes themselves? Taxes have to be paid don't they? Who pays the other 20.00 bucks a year?

Magic Jack makes money off you in other ways like on screen ads and such. Also, they may not be classified as full VoIP provider (not sure). Others talking about this tax topic: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7758&p=55338#p55333

$3.47 vs $40+ a month Ooma is still a much better deal. I'm just waiting on the ok from the wife to start the port.

Also, with Ooma you do not have to have a PC running to maintain phone service. The cost to keep the PC going for that year may eat into the savings you would see with MagicJack.

I had a Magic Jack for a time two years ago. I know that there are some defenders, but mine only worked about 15% of the time. Maybe the taxes are prorated. 41.64 x 0.15 = $6.25 :P

They say the cpu has to be on all the time for magic jack to work- eating up power bills. Well, the ooma router has to be on all the time also. I have my computer set to boot up when the phone rings so magic jack answers the phone. I have the answer modes set to 63 rings. It seems to work just fine. I am going to ask Ooma to waive the taxes since I am already paying to Magic Jack taxes. Isn't that double dipping by the government?

P.S. I have waisted a lot of gas and time looking for the new coffee/Ooma combo. Nobody has heard of this before. I said I saw in on the forum so it must be true.

The taxes are per line.
Back when I had two copper lines from Verizon the taxes were charged on a per line basis.

I don't know about your computer, but mine uses at least 150 watts when running idle. My Telo uses about 5 watts by actual measurement. That's about 44 kwh per year for the Telo, and about 1300 kwh per year for the PC. My PC runs about half the time anyway, so let's say Magic Jack would cost me only about another 600 kwh per year, versus 44 for the Telo. I pay about 12 cents per kwh where I live, so the Telo costs me $5.28 per year in electricity, versus about $72.00 for Magic Jack. To me that seems a significant difference.

maybe the electric company subsidises Magic Jack's taxes?
