With many international phone numbers being longer than 10 digits, I have un-checked the automatic 10 digit dialing. My question is this. I tried to call Costa Rica where the country code is 506. I dialed a 1 before the 506 and got Canada. On international calls, do you just use the country code without the 1?

I've never made an out of country call but my Verizon phone book says to dial 011 + country code.

To call Costa Rica, you have to dial 011-506 plus the area code and then the number.

011 indicated it is an international call. Next you would use the country code. Many of them being only two digit. Costa Rica is one of the exceptions with a 3 digit country code.

A "1" prefix is normally used for a domestic long distance call. (US or Canada)

Hope it helps.
