I think I need some keywords

You were doing things in the wrong order.
You're probably right, but then I wouldn't have met you guys. :)

@lbmofo: That thread, yes. :) I haven't checked out the modem yet per se, except to do the speed tests. Is there something else I should do?

Goto that modem IP and check out some readings.
As murphy said,
The downstream signal power should be between -10 and +10 dBmV.
The SNR should be 35 or more.
The upstream power level should be less than 55 dBmV.

Okay, I see. Looks like the modem falls into the right ranges. I found this:

SNR: 36.8 dB 
Received Signal Strength: -2.6 dBmV  	         Power Level: 42.2 dBmV
I watched it for a while, they didn't vary much at all. The modem is a Thomson.

yeah, your voip quality and modem attributes seem good.
