Last week I got an e-mail stating that my phone number has been ported. I now need to cancel my service with the phone company.
I no longer have dial tone and have unplugged the cord from the phone jack and I still can receive calls.
When I call the phone company, they tell me they still have the number and have not received anything to move the number to someone else. Yet Ooma states they have the number.

So, if I cancel the phone service and tell them that the number isn't being ported to Ooma, will I lose my phone number because the phone company won't drop my account while they have the number?

You should not have to cancel your old phone service. When I ported my number from Verizon to Vonage many years ago, the Verizon account was automatically terminated when the port was complete. I never told them anything. There was only one number on my Verizon account. If there is more than one number on the account, it depends on whether you ported the main number or a secondary number.
