First off, I apologize if this is a re-post. I've spent several hours this morning reading this forum and searching the internet, but can't find any conclusive answers.

I've had Ooma since early 2009. We have a core system (Hub + scout). Late last week my scout stopped working all of a sudden. We had some thunderstorms in the area, but we didn't lose power or have any detectable surges. So, I don't think it had anything to do with that, but you never know. I did all the regular trouble shooting and even got support on the phone. They determined that my scout is bad. I researched online and other people with similar symptoms said it could be the wall port on the hub. I don't put a lot of stock into the support person's comments and so feel that it could be either one.

Regardless, I'm thinking of replacing and moving to the telo since the hub/scout is no longer sold. My current set up is this: hub in the office wired to the fax machine. Wall port of hub goes to the house wiring. Then I have the scout in the kitchen, plugged into the phone port in the wall. This way the fax number rings just the fax machine and the home number rings just the scout. I then have a multi-handset wireless phone system connected to the scout. This setup has worked really well for me and I'd like to keep something similar with the telo.

This is where I could really use the expertise on this board: from what I'm reading I'm thinking this may not be possible. Can you guys please confirm? How would I keep the fax number dedicated to the fax line and keep the home number tied to my multi-handset phone system. I gathered that a telo alone won't do it - i'll likely need a telo handset too. I'm okay with that - but then how do I bring my multi-handset system into the mix?

Thanks for all your help!

For the Telo, there isn't a partner device that can provide a hardwired personal/private dialtone.

You can still assign the fax number to the Telo and ring the other number on all the Telo handsets but this means your multi-handsets would not be in the mix.

If you get a Telo, what you can do is to have both numbers as shared but have the fax line ring differently and have a fax machine that can detect different ring pattern and pick up. That way you can have your multi-handsets in the mix.

Thanks for the quick reply, lbmofo. You confirmed what I was afraid of from what I'd read - that it can't be done (or that it can be done with two telos = twice the cost).

You do bring up a very interesting idea I hadn't thought of: have the lines ring differently. I've never used that feature, and went through the docs on the fax machine to see if mine has it. Apparently it does - it talks about DRD (distinctive ring service). I can set the fax machine to only pick up calls that have double ring (as opposed to the regular single ring). Can I configure the Telo to double ring one number and single ring the other? That may solve my problem. If I go this route, will the multi-handset line also double ring until the fax picks up (1 or 2 rings), or will it not ring at all?

Thanks again!

You could post what you Ooma Hub and Scout is doing. Someone might have some suggestions.

There are still some new Ooma Hubs and Scouts out there:

Thanks for the pointer, thunderbird. I read the other post and am seeing something similar, not not exactly the same. My hub shows a blue tab and the connected phone works fine. However my scout shows a solid red tab with the bottom 4 buttons all red. From what I've read, I understand that this means the scout can't communicate with the hub. I've put the scout next to the hub and directly connected the wall ports with a short cable, but the problem still exists. I've tried a couple of different cables - nothing helped. I also did the 30-second reset on the hub (a couple of times), but no dice. I think I tried it on the scout too, but am not sure, so I'll try again tonight. Also, I was unaware of the web interface to the system, so i'll log into the hub tonight as well to see if I can get any additional diagnostic information.

Since the hub works fine I concluded that the fault is either with the wall port on the hub, or something in the scout. Since we haven't had any surges that I'm aware of, I have a hard time believing that the equipment is fried somehow. I do believe that somehow something got flipped and needs to be reset, but haven't found the right way to do that yet.

I'll follow up again with an update after I've reset the scout and checked the web interface.

All phones will ring until fax picks up. Since the ring will be different, not much of a problem.

I tried all the things in the posts below and still no luck. My hub is fine (and if a phone is connected to it, it works). However the bottom row of lights on the scout is still red, as is the tab. I tried to hard reset the scout several times, but it didn't do anything. Note: you know the hub is being reset because you see a different light pattern, but on the scout it didn't look any different to normal startup. Does anyone know for sure if holding the tab on the scout for 30 seconds while powering up actually hard reboots?

I also checked the web interface for the hub - it's not very useful. I saw:

Internet: Connected
Ooma Core: Connected
Phone Line: Disconnected

This is interesting since a phone line is connected and working (unless by "phone line" it means "wall line").

Anyway, as I read more on the forums I'm becoming convinced that it's not a scout problem, but rather a hub issue. Maybe there was some kind of surge through the home phone lines that caused the wall port to die. Of course since I've had Ooma for over 2 years, this won't be covered under warranty. I could get a new Telo, but I really do like the hub/scout setup.

I read a bit about the original core system being different to buying a hub and scout separately (from a tax/monthly fee perspective). Does anyone know how this would work if I were to buy a replacement hub online? Would it still be totally free as it is now, or would I have to pay the regulatory fees since it's not the core system I had initially bought?

Thanks,
Yash
