I figure I should stop paying Comcast $7 / month for modem rentals and just buy one. Does anyone have a suggestion based on positive experience on which model to buy? I would like to get a DOCSIS 3 modem in case Comcast finds it in their hearts to up my speeds over time.

Here is a link to Comcast's tested and approved devices:

I'd like to get one in with a checkmark in the D3 column.

Thanks.

I'd go for the least expensive you can find of the "Extreme 105" tier devices:
DOCSIS 3.0 (ARRIS WBM760A, Cisco DPC3000, Netgear CMD31T, Motorola SB6120, Ubee U10C035, Arris TM722G)

I use a Linksys BEFCMU10. I've had it for years, and it has never given any problems.

Edit: My bad. It isn't DOCSIS 3.0 and therefore is no answer to your question.

But it's not a DOCSIS 3 modem which is what was asked.

I agree - I've used this modem for about a year with no problems. It's highly rated on Amazon and Newegg (and it's on sale!) with over 500 reviews.
