Can I use HomePlugs in my Ooma setup?

Overview

If your modem (or router) is in one place and you’d prefer to install your Ooma Telo in another, one option is to use HomePlug adapters. HomePlug can give you the freedom to install your Telo anywhere in your home that’s convenient to you. For example:

• Your modem (or router) is installed in the garage or wiring closet and you would like to install the Telo in your kitchen or living room
• Your modem (or router) is installed in one room but you want to put the Telo in a different room

HomePlug adapters allow you to extend network connectivity throughout your home by using your electrical power outlets. It does this by taking the Ethernet signal from your modem or router and sending it across your AC wiring. HomePlug adapters come in pairs, allowing you to "bridge" your Ethernet connection from one power outlet to another. Ooma Telo and HomePlug set up options

If you have separate modem and router devices, you can connect the Ooma Telo between the modem and the router as shown in the diagram below. HomePlug adapters are used between the modem and the Ooma Telo, and the router is located next to the Ooma Telo. This is the recommended setup for best voice quality, as this configuration will allow the the Ooma Telo to give your phone calls top priority on your Internet connection.

The other option is to connect your Ooma Telo behind the router or integrated modem/router as shown in the diagram below. HomePlug adapters are used between the router and the Ooma Telo.

Note:  This setup may be more likely to experience lower call quality during peak Internet usage scenarios. To get the best voice quality, Ooma recommends the setup shown in Figure 1.
